Why Does Hair Loss Occur in Men? Causes Explained

More than half of men aged 30 and above experience signs of hair loss, say statistics. And it increases to 4 in 5 men by age 50.

But why is hair loss so prevalent in men? You can blame your genetics for that, but there are several other possible reasons. Here are the main causes why men tend to lose hair as they age:

·    Genetics

Male pattern baldness, otherwise known as Androgenetic Alopecia, is caused by genetics. How it is inherited isn’t clear yet, but it tends to run in families. So, if someone in your family, particularly your father, has baldness, you are likely to experience it, too. Depending on your family history, you may start to lose hair in your teens or 20s. Your hair may start getting thinner, softer, and shorter. But the good news is that genetic hair loss can be regained through hair transplant for men.

· Medical Issues

Hair loss caused by medical issues is generally temporary. You will regain hair naturally when you treat or cure the underlying problem. And to speed up growth, you have hair loss treatment for men.

What medical issues result in hair loss? Anemia and thyroid problems top the list. Apart from these two, you are most likely to lose hair if you have diabetes or lupus.

·  Medication

Sometimes, your hair loss can be a side effect of medications or treatments you take to treat other health problems. Chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer are two fine examples. However, hair regrows once the treatment ends.

Hair loss can also result from medication taken for these health problems:

  • Arthritis
  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Gout
  • Heart ailments

·  Poor diet

Not many would consider it, but diet plays its role in keeping hair healthy and preventing male baldness. A diet low in iron and protein can cause or worsen hair loss. The best course of action to prevent hair loss or regrow lost hair is to eat a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, and essential vitamins.

But there are times when a healthy diet can’t control hair loss or reverse the signs of baldness. In those cases, consulting a hair transplant clinic for men is the best bet.

· Shock or stress

Sudden or excessive weight loss, fever, seasonal flu, physical or emotional stress, and other similar factors can also lead to temporary hair loss for several months.

Bottom line

While genetics is the primary cause of male hair loss, also called alopecia, it isn’t the only culprit. Your medical issues, lifestyle changes, nutrition, and medication can also trigger hair loss.
